What happens when 17-year-old Tavi Gevinson interviews 21-year-old Miley Cyrus for the May issue of Elle? Miley is finally free to open up about Olds. Here are Miley's truths about her elders, as culled from the interview:

1. You shouldn't always listen to them.
"Sometimes my managers say, 'Why do you ask us questions if when we start to answer it...' And I'm like, 'I hear what you say and I'm gonna do the opposite of it. Because you're old and you're a man, and I'm young and I'm a girl and I know that's right.' I've just got to make sure that I'm the voice of my generation.'"

2. What they DON'T like, you DO like.
"When I do things that would get someone old to shake their head, my fans go ape shit."

3. They aren't necessarily OLD old.
"I just think old people — I feel bad that I call them old, 'cause they're probably in their thirties or forties — but they just don't understand it." [It being the "selfie generation."]

4. They are her worst critics.
"A lot of people who have made those comments [claiming Miley exploits black culture] are older — they were living in a world that was more defined by color. Now that isn't black culture — that's just culture in general. That's pop culture; that's the way we dance. These pissed-off moms on the Internet — they don't understand that when you go to a club now it's not about bleing black or white or heavy or thick. I'm shaking my ass because I want to shake my ass."

5. They need things explained to them.
"That's kind of why I was excited for you to be interviewing me — I sit with a lot of old people that try to get me to explain culture. I'm like, 'I don't know how — you're just not living in the same world I'm living in.'"

If you're over 29 and feel bad about yourself right now, take heart, because toward the end of the interview, Miley says something that only a Young would say:

"I worked more when I was a kid than I'd ever allow myself to do now. What is it from The Sixth Sense [sic], where's he's like, "all work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy"? That was totally me."

Oh, Miley: That was totally The Shining. Never change/age.
