The beauty guilt continues: Thousands of women felt remorseful about their cheap manicures after the publication of an investigative report detailing the unsafe and unfair work conditions in NYC nail salons, but it's not just manicurists who are putting themselves at risk to make us look more beautiful.

According to Alexandra Scranton, director of science and research at Women's Voices for the Earth, hairstylists are reportedly struggling with long work hours under hazardous conditions that lead to long-term health risks, all for very little pay.

Scranton told HuffPost Live that "up to 60 to 70 percent of salon workers reported dermatitis on their hands and respiratory conditions like asthma and decrease in lung function," mostly due to chemical overexposure in hair salons. ThinkProgress also recently reported that hairdressers are more likely to die from Alzheimer's disease, presenile dementia, and motor neuron disease.

The most shocking news of all concerns African-American hairdressers and costumers. Teni Adewumi, an environmental justice research coordinator for Black Women for Wellness, revealed to HuffPost Live findings from an upcoming report that show that stylists suffer from higher risks of certain kinds of cancer, immune disorders, uterine fibroids and even miscarriages. This is all due to working around treatments that contain harsh chemicals.

It's not just your stylist who's at risk: You, the client, are too. Bleach, ammonia and formaldehyde are only a few of the dangerous toxins found in the air at salons.

A good alternative? Go longer between color visits or try a natural salon that doesn't use chemicals and uses all organic products instead. Or you can be super fashionable and wear a medical mask? Anything helps.
