For all of you who've dyed your hair a super-trendy rainbow shade like red, silver, or violet, but were crushed when the color faded almost immediately, chances are your heat styling products are the ones to blame.

Hair colorist Guy Tang demonstrated in a video on YouTube and Instagram how straightening your hair for two seconds (literally!) with an iron set to 400 degrees can completely ruin your hair color. Tang says that using a blow-dryer that is too hot or washing your hair with hot water can ruin your hair color as well, so have fun with lukewarm to cold showers if you want to maintain your shade.

Tang makes a good point when he argues in his video that you wouldn't even cook most food in the oven at 400 degrees, so why would you cook your hair with a straightener set that high? All that to say, ladies, turn down the temperature on your flat iron and blow-dry your hair on low or else suffer the consequences of faded hair. Womp.
